DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY INFRASTRUCTURE

Digital infrastructure refers to all the digital technologies used within an organization, which provides the foundation for information technology.  In relation to schools it is the tools and technologies a school needs to set up in a digital world.  An institution's digital infrastructure is the backbone of the digital strategy.  Without the elements in the infrastructure the technology will not be functional.  There are many aspects which need to be discussed further for the full benefits of the infrastructure to be realized.  Infrastructure includes things like the physical buildings, the network, bandwidth, computer labs and the electrical supply.

Internet Connectivity

This refers to the way we access the internet, whether through dial-up telephone lines, wireless connections or broadband connections, enabling devices to send and receive data. In implementing a Digital Strategy this element must be incorporated from the beginning. A major concern for educators is the lack of adequate internet connectivity throughout their institution. The bandwidth (amount of data travelling over an internet connection in a given amount of time) for the network and the knowledge of how many persons will be accessing the Internet should be taken into account.  The digital tools require some form of internet connectivity for both the teachers and students to function at an optimum level.

The Ellerslie School network has provisions for connectivity, which includes having multiple access points throughout the compound, using passwords for specific users along with periodic monitoring of activity to ensure there is no unauthorized access.  We also partnered Project Discovery Barbados Online Learning and Teaching (BOLT) Program to increase connectivity.

The computer labs are equipped for wired access, however wireless access is also utilized.  Every staff point and most of the school blocks have working connections which are used by the entire staff on a daily basis.  The few blind spots on the compound are dealt with individually and improvement has been seen in these areas.

Technical Support

This is a service provided by a company or ITC in an institution, which provides users of the network with assistance and information on use of digital products. In educational institutions the ITC provides the necessary support in the fulfillment of the goals for the institution, thereby working in conjunction with the educational leader to put systems in place to deal with any technical issues with the operating system, or internet connectivity.

Our IT department is capable of handling the technical issues which have ben encountered and help is always there for staff and students.  They set up the hardware (laptops, tablets) for staff  and students and ensure that persons are aware of the use and care of the issued device.  Software support is also provided as the ITC also offers training in the use of the applications and advises on the digital tools which can be incorporated in teaching.  Having a competent ITC in place is a resource which greatly benefits my institution.

During the Covid-19 Pandemic devices were provided for all members of staff and students who were unable to source their own devices.  Currently there are 4 active computer labs on the compound with around 80 devices for class use. Additional devices are still available from the ITC should there be a need.

Procurement and maintenance of digital devices

Most educational institutions were issued with a number of devices for use by students and teachers, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.  These devices require routine maintenance and upkeep and are constantly updating, in order to have the latest software features.  As the leader of an institution implementing a plan to guide technology use, I need to ensure that funds are allocated for this aspect of my plan to ensure a smooth transition and application.  Educating both staff and students about the correct care and use of the devices will be a part of the strategy as ongoing training for staff will be provided.  They in turn will disseminate the information to the students.

Digital safety, digital and data security, online security

Security is another important aspect in implementing a digital strategy.  Security is essential to protect the privacy of individuals within your organization, by safeguarding their personal information from being lost.  The Data Protection Act provides a guide as to how best to ensure correct procedures are followed.

Implementing measures such as password protection, virus protection software and encrypting important documents can assure persons that security is being taken seriously, and this can help persons become more at ease with the use of technology.  Persons should also be notified and informed about how their personal information is being collected and who will be able to access the information.  This is where a clear privacy notice document should be shared with the requisite personnel.  Installation of firewalls is also a consideration to prevent students from accessing adult materials and this has been noted as we continue to improve security and safety.
